Anchorage can feel like a perfect little bubble sometimes…but we know that’s not always true. Our children will encounter the same pressures and challenges that all others face.
On Thursday, January 12, Dan Orman will join our APTA general meeting for an important discussion about one of the themes we find most challenging as parents – talking to our kids about drugs and alcohol.
Dan works with the Kentucky Center for School Safety, is a 30-year veteran of the Kentucky education system and has dedicated his career to identifying the warning signs of drugs, understanding how bullying and social media play a role, and helping kids and families to find positive paths forward. Foundational to his belief is that there isn’t a “one size fits all” answer, we must have open and honest conversations both with our kids and as a community.
During his talk, Dan will address some of the issues that confound us all:
- How soon is too soon to talk about these issues?
- What are the warning signs I should look for?
- What do I do if I see them in my kid?
- What do I do if I see them in one of my kid’s friends?
- What is the best way to start the conversation with my child?
Dan is a thoughtful and engaging speaker with a true passion for and personal connection to his work. His talk will be informal and there will be lots of opportunity for questions.
